Photographer Spotlight – Jake McCarthy

Today sees the introduction of Photographer Spotlight and I’m delighted to feature Jacob McCarthy (Jake) who as well as being a talented photographer is also co-founder of Freedom Edits.

Tell us a little about yourself in a few brief sentences…

I’m a wedding photographer from South Wales with a passion for print and album sales. Also co-founder of Freedom Edits, a complete end to end post production outsourcing solution for photographers worldwide.

What was your first camera?

Canon 350d

When did you start your photography business and what was your inspiration for doing so?

I started my photography business in 2012, in all honesty, I took it as a subject in school and just enjoyed it and was pretty good at it. It all went from there!

I love everything business, so was far more driven by the accessibility of photography to allow me to discover that side of myself rather than the art itself.

What is your happy song – you know the one you can’t help but smile to when you hear it?

I have an EXTREMELY eclectic taste and my favourites change day to day. I guess it depends on what side of the bed I wake up!

Today I’m listening to Migos! Yesterday was Dean Martin.

Share something that not many people know about you?

I feel like questions like this just highlight how boring I am hahaha. Or open? Who knows!

But, most people don’t know that I have an unhealthy obsession with shoes. Obsessed!

Best piece of advice you have been given?

When I first started I was very averse to risk. Then someone said, “how will you know if it’s the right decision if you never make it”.

It’s super simple, but something just clicked.

The next morning it was as if I was a different man, a lot more tolerable to risk and a new outlook.

Taking risks and trying new things is one of the reasons I’m doing what I’m doing today and loving every second!

What is your favourite piece of photography equipment and why?

Good question! It has to be a Sigma 50mm Art 1.4.

It’s beautiful and (I don’t know whether I should admit this but) I’ve shot the last 10 or so weddings with it and haven’t changed my lens once!

If you could photograph anybody or anything what would it be and why?

Barrack Obama! I have no idea why. I just love the guy and he has an interesting face and a good smile.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

Whenever I needed to, I could disappear. Not so much to get away from people, more so to have that nice TV from Currys for free. Whooops.

What advice would you give to someone at the beginning of their photography career?

Work hard & Educate yourself.

The truth is, there’s always someone working harder and better than you, learn from them.

Surround yourself with good people and educate yourself constantly. Learn to market and learn to sell.

One more thing… be nice! It’ll get you a hell of a long way.

If you were planning the ultimate picnic, what would be in your hamper and where would you go?

Meat and cheese. You need nothing more haha

Also, Pepsi Max, I’m obsessed with it!

I’d probably go to the coast in Oregan. Beautiful!

What is your vision for your photography business, how would your perfect photography business look?

My goal for the last 2 years has been to implement a strategy where we can double a client’s initial investment every time!

I’m so happy that we’ve finally got there but I’d love to further progress that, who knows where we can go!

In terms of Freedom Edits, I’d love to educate more people about album sales and making more money for their business. No more starving artists I say!
