Why Looking After Yourself Could Be The Best Thing You Ever Do For Your Business
It’s 7pm on a Thursday evening. You aren’t looking after yourself again. You are hungry and tired. Your concentration and focus are nowhere near their best, but you just want to finish writing that copy for the new landing page for your website. So you press on. You will grab something to eat later. You are sure that there is a ready meal in the fridge you can quickly do in the microwave. And if you do end up skipping a meal maybe it will help with that weight you seem to have put on!
It’s now 9pm. Your neck and shoulders are sore from sitting at the computer for far too long. Your eyes are tired and you just don’t seem to be able to focus. You are sure that you have hardly achieved anything in the last couple of hours. You have an early start in the morning. Maybe you will have to finish what you were working on tomorrow after all.
Tired and a little despondent you step away from the computer and head for the kitchen. The thought of a microwaved ready meal isn’t particularly appetising but it is quick and will take care of the hunger. You promise that tomorrow you will start looking after yourself.
Now you start to beat up on yourself. You promised yourself that you wouldn’t work so late again. That you would eat home cooked meals that would nourish you and your body. You feel like crap. It is another day when you didn’t finish off all you set out to do. Oh well, at least you don’t have to write a to do list for the morning – you can just carry on with today’s.
You just feel like you are getting nowhere with your business, all those great ideas, yet you just can’t seem to get them actioned. And to cap it all you now have a stinking headache.
Sound familiar? You aren’t alone. This is a story familiar to entrepreneurs and home business owners the world over.
That is a perfect description of how far too many of my days ended up. It is demoralising, and a vicious circle. The more days you have like that, the lower your energies levels the next day. You may find that you don’t sleep as well too, compounded the problem.
But what can you do about it? You keep promising yourself that you will start looking after yourself. You have been trying to break the pattern for so long, yet time and time again you find yourself falling into the same habits.
If you really want to you can turn things around. I did, and the difference it has made in my life is amazing. I have energy to spare, I feel good and I get so much more done in my business in far less time.
It Takes Commitment
You have to make a promise to yourself and commit to keeping that promise. A commitment to start looking after yourself now.
I promise you it will be one of the best decisions that you ever make.
Not only will you feel so much better in yourself, but you will enjoy life again. You will have the time to actually live a life again – remember how it was before you started your business?
Just like when you exercise your body your muscles need a recovery time, well so does your mind – it needs time to relax and recharge too.
How To Start Looking After Yourself
Of course this all sounds very well in theory. But you have a to do list so long that you don’t know how you will ever get through it all. How on earth are you going to find time to look after yourself and finish work at a decent hour?
Well as I said you have to commit. Set an alarm each day that will signal the end of your working day. The first day set it 15 minutes earlier than you finished work the day before. Do this each day and soon you will be finishing at a decent hour.
Use the new found time to start looking after yourself. Cook a balanced and nutritious meal. Unwind and relax in the evening time. Use some of your new found time to exercise.
Make time for a meditation practice. It could be as simple as 10 minutes when you get up sitting quietly and focusing on your breathing. Or maybe one of the many guided meditations that are available. I find these guided meditations by Deepak Chopra to be excellent. The benefits of meditation are beyond doubt – there is so much scientific as well as anecdotal evidence for the benefits.
Add some exercise to your routine 3 times a week. Don’t go mad, depending on your fitness level start out with a brisk walk and develop it from there.
There is no point in starting off all out on a mission and finding that you give up after 3 days though. Take your time, gradually make the changes to that they become new routines and you develop habits. You want this to become a new routine, your way of life, otherwise you will just slip back into old and bad habits.
How Will This Be the Best Thing You Ever Do For Your Business
The benefits of looking after yourself mean that you will achieve far more in less time. You will have greater focus and clarity. Your decisions will be easier to make. You will make good decisions as you will be able to think more clearly and tune into your instincts better. You will also get far more good ideas.
You will actually get things done, finished, shipped. No more half finished projects all over the place. And when that happens your business will make more money because you implement your ideas, create new products, launch marketing campaigns, build email lists.[Tweet “I promise you it will be one of the best decisions that you ever make.”]
I promise you that if you start looking after yourself the benefits both personally and in your business will be profound. Because of the improvements in your wellbeing you will achieve so much more for your business in less time. Your judgements will be better too – so you won’t be making decisions that cost you money or missing out on opportunities because your mind is in such a fog that you don’t even see them.
Will Looking After Yourself Really Make Such A Difference?
Believe me yes it will. I was the person described at the beginning of this article. I felt crap, was tired, lethargic, didn’t get anything finished, was putting on weight and not much fun to be around because all I thought and did was about my business.
But now I feel so good, full of energy.
Over the last few months I have made changes and I feel what is probably the best I have ever felt in my life. Now when I get up in the morning I give myself time to be still. I started off my doing short 10 to 15 minute guided meditations, but now I practice Qi Gong which is like a moving meditation.
Then three days a week I exercise. Nothing too drastic. I started off at 15 minutes each time gradually increasing to 30 minutes.
I am also eating much better. I received a Nutribullet for Christmas. I love it. So much easier / quicker to use than my juicer with the benefit that you are taking in the fibre as well as all the nutrients. If you don’t know what a Nutribullet is it is basically a type of blender that whizzes vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds (whatever you choose to put into it) into a smoothie type drink or nutriblast. What makes this so much better than a blender is the “jug” is also the glass for drinking out of, it is so simple to use that it has no buttons and it is very quick and easy to clean.
So my breakfast is a nutriblast. I mix these up so that I get a balance of different nutrients over the week. This ensures that I still get a good few portions of fruit and veg even if all my other meals aren’t quite as healthy. I am also eating a lot more healthier in general. No more ready meals. More veg and less carbohydrates. More home cooked food – a beef stew is in the oven as I type this. This hasn’t been a chore – I am enjoying my food more. I haven’t banned any foods, but I am less inclined to eat foods that are not good for me. Because I feel so much better I find that I don’t want to eat foods that leave me feeling bloated and slugging.
If you had told me that making such simple changes could make such a drastic difference in the way I felt I would not have believed you. But by making these simple changes I feel like a new person and I now complete my to do list each day!
Start Looking After Yourself Now
So to sum up make these changes and achieve more in your business:
- Finish working at a reasonable hour to allow yourself some down time to recharge. You may even find that this is when you get your best ideas.
- Take 10 to 15 minutes to be still and let your brain recharge.
- Exercise, but don’t over do it though. Thirty minutes three times a week will make a difference.
- Eat well – more nutritionally balanced meals, increase your portions of fruit and vegetables. Use something like a juicer or a Nutribullet to give yourself a helping hand.
