How To Freshen And Clean Your Home With Essential Oils
You might be surprised to learn that many air fresheners, household cleaners and fragrances are toxic. They contain petroleum-based fragrances that release chemicals into your air. Stop buying air fresheners and make your own with essential oils which are a safe and natural way to clean and freshen your home.
For this recipe you’ll need a small Mason jar or glass jar with a metal lid. A used peanut butter or jelly jar works well. Fill the jar about half full with baking soda. Using a hammer and a nail, poke holes in the lid.
This allows the fragrance to escape. Add about 10-20 drops of your favorite essential oil to the baking soda. Place the cap on the jar and position in the room you’d like to freshen up. Lavender essential oil is great for relaxing and a citrus or eucalyptus oil is great to add vibrancy to a room.
If you like to be able to spray your air freshener, you can fill a small glass spray bottle with distilled water and add essential oil until the mixture reaches the desired strength. Spray when and whenever necessary. (This makes a great linen spray too.)
Another option or an air freshener is to fill a small jar with a narrow opening about a third of the way with an essential oil. You can purchase reeds at a crafting store. Place the reeds in the jar. They’ll absorb the oils which will then be diffused into the air.
Cleaning and Disinfecting
You might already know that the mixture of vinegar and water, in equal amounts, is one of the most effective household cleansers. It’s safe and free from harsh chemicals. However, vinegar may not be your favorite scent.
You can add several drops of your favorite essential oil to the mixture to give it a more pleasant scent. And as the vinegar evaporates, the essential oil scent tends to linger, leaving your home smelling fresh and clean. You can also add your favorite essential oil to castile soap when you’re cleaning your floors.
Finally, you can add essential oil to your unscented natural laundry detergent. There are many fun and enjoyable ways to use essential oils to clean and freshen your home. Next time we’ll take a look at some of the surprising ways that toxins can enter your home and what you can do about it.
